This is taken from the trend timbers timber species list of timbers
Their listing is quite extensive and I have extracted from their listing the boat building timbers
Australian Native timbers
Sliver Ash, Huon Pine
Celery Top Pine, Australian Cedar
Queensland Maple, Blackbutt
King William Pine, Hoop Pine
Queensland Kauri, Spotted Gum
Imported/ exotic
Teak, Central American Mahogany
New Guinea Cedar Malaysian Red Cedar
Kwila/Merbau, Fijian Mahogany
New Guinea Rosewood White Beech( solomon Islands)
Sitka Spruce Kauri Damar Minyak
Balsa Lignum Vitae
Iroko Fijian Kauri
South American Cedar Sapele
African Mahogany Jelutong
Canadian Yellow Cedar Western Red Cedar
Douglas Fir ( Oregon) Vitex
Kapur Macrocarpa
Some of the Australian timbers are almost unobtainable
Queensland Maple, Silver Ash and Australian Cedar being the hardest. Huon Pine is available but the cost is a bit hexy, 175 x 25 mm is almost $30 a lin mtr.
Lignum Vitau is extremely hard timber and even harder to obtain, not that we need it for any of our boats. It's a timber that doesn't float that's how dense it is!!
Trend timbers do not list Amoora as suitable for Boat building but Aust furniture timbers and so does Mathews.
Another tmber to use as a teak replacement that is also suitable is an African Timber that is very close to the teak look and feel without the oiliness is Afromosia.
