Here is a picture of my new 17' Syndicate being built at Peter Adcock's in Mornington. It will probably get an Argo V drive and a Toyota 1UZFE V8. Early days yet and still getting a few bits together. Can't wait to start fitting it out.
Also found a great place that makes top race quality steel skegs, rudders and CNC alloy cav plate gear etc. Newby Engineering in Smithfield, Sydney (02) 96045863. Not that far from where I am most of the time in Sydney.

Looks good Chris, is that the motor out of the Toyota Soarer? I have heard they scream along pretty well....or is it the 5.7 V8 diesel you're putting in it?

Looking good Chris. Just think, with the 5.7 oiler, you could put it under survey. Now, that could open up some opportunities.

The only comment I would have on the Argo box is the gears are quite loud for a social ski boat (loader than the engine!) You do have the option of getting the gears lapped to make them (a bit) quieter. The Argo box also seems to have an annoying bearing rattle at about 2200 rpm. I spoke to Cassells and the guys at Childs Play marine and apparently there's nothing you can do about it. What makes it annoying is it happens at just a nice cruising speed / wakeboarding speed... Overall the box has not given me any problems but if I was doing Mystress again I would probably investigate something like a Haines and Hellier instead...

Dave Newby has been making great marine gear for ages and made my 7 degree skeg back in 1975 and the quality was better than anything else available at that time

thanks for the comments. I will be using the 4.0Litre V8 (same as in a Soarer, LS400). I previously had one of these in Commodore and have tools manuals etc. Good to hear that someone else has a Lexus V8 as well. I haven't really looked into a Haynes and Hellier V drive but will have to compare. I know a lot of V drives are noisy and not too worried about the noise. What % gears are you running in Mystress and hull size Neil? The Syndicate is light (170Kg) bare hull and I am thinking around 10% step up. I will be making most of the bits my self and keeping everything as light as possible (alloy).
The Lexus V8s are quite easy to work on and now have heaps of good gear available. Argo and Spool make stronger conrods, Wieseco, ACL, Ross, Arias etc make forged pistons, EFI technology make individual throttle body manifolds, Bullet cars in QLD have supercharger kits using the latest Harrop blower (as used on new Ford V8) and Kelford cams in NZ have billet cams. And of course the stock parts are available from Toyota dealers. I will start with a stock engine and go from there. They are that cheap I will probably pick up a couple to play with.
I have seen an outboard (Plastic) ski race boat converted to a Mercruiser Alpha sterndrive and stock 1UZFE V8 with an as supplied Wolf ECU and no engine or prop tuning, this boat was good for nearly 80mph on the GPS speedo. I have photos of this somewhere.
I checked out Newby's a couple of weeks ago and spent some time talking with Dave. I didn't realise they made so much boat gear, it was a real surprise. Good to meet someone old school who really knows their stuff. I will probably go out there tomorrow and organise a skeg.

Mystress is 16ft and would be almost exactly the same weight as your Syndicate. It is currently running 8% step up gears. The prop is 11.5 x 13 3 blade.

I'm find 8% is actually too tall a ratio. I'd probably prefer about 3% to let it rev a bit more but I guess it depends on whether your running a transmission and what prop...

Mystress looks good, I checked out the thread, looks like you have done a lot of work. They are great engines and I think they are hard to go past on value for money basis. Since I last fiddled with one of these, a lot more aftermarket parts have come available and they appear to be a lot more user friendly than the Nissan V8s.
I had a look at a 1UZFE bored and stroked out 5.2L, food for thought, a lot people supercharge or turbo them, I kind of like the idea of a stroker crank and other mods.
It looks like you are using a Cassell bellhousing, this will also be ideal for a V drive only set up. A heat exchanger seems the way to go. Like you say the gearing depends on the prop and many other factors. At this stage I will probably run a Wolf ECU and convert the ignition to individual coils on plugs, doing away with the distributors.
I went to Newby engineering and they are making up a race style 7 3/4 deg. steel skeg for me (same set up as circuit race boats). I want to set the hull up with circuit race style cav plate and SS or HPC coated headers (still not sure whether I will through the transom or over the top. I not really interested in reverse (just want to go fast and keep the weight right down).

engine he thinks .596 world castings alloy hemi hilbourne injection and large fuel tank. possibly a little to much . but they look good

My memory isnt what it used to be but I seem to remember the H and H vee drive used Casale gears from the USA
