Restoration on a grand scale

Postby Chivs » 03 Mar 2025, 10:38

A great friend has put me onto You Tube site Sampson boat Co Tally Ho. Pretty much a solo restoration of a 110 year old yacht. Whilst it is on a grand scale it has bought back memories of Tomboys restoration, particularly the keel (dead wood) replacement and scarfing. ( episode 12-14) There is lots of handy tips right down to using epoxy and making old school red lead putty! The motivation, enthusiasm and ingenuity of the builder, Leo is something to see! Cheers

Just looked at the 7 year time lapse video. Absolutely enthralling viewing. What a project!

There is a fair bit of ingenuity going on!!! Moving that keel on rollers and doing a lot of handling of heavy stuff solo brought back serious back pains, glad you enjoyed it Greg cheers mate

That is exceptional work on so many levels. The size of timbers is staggering, accuracy of cutting those big chunks of wood and just the scope of the job. But.... I wonder how much original timber was used in the project?

Bob, I think they were using the original timbers in the fire :D The amount of cubic timber was only exceeded by the cubic dollars.

I didn't see any steam bending lol.
I did however age just watching it. What a mammoth undertaking. I wonder how happy his neighbors were about it?
