Easter has come and gone. I didn't achieve as much as I wanted but all the preparation work has been completed.

The Mahogany and and Silver Ash strips round the deck edge and across the transom have all be glued in place. The Mahogany king plank strip has been glued in place and some of the other deck strips have been machined and fitted ready to be glued in place.

It's this prep work that takes all the time and has little to show for the efforts.

So just when things are getting better murphys law strikes.

Megan and I came to Sydney to be with our daughter on her last day of her stay doing study at Sydney University.

Went shopping and noticed the car was dumping water. Hoping it was a loose hose but no. It has split the radiator where the expansion tank meets the main body of the radiator.

So I have ripped it out while the car is parked in the Kings Cross car park, dumped the coolant on the ground just waiting for the new radiator to be delivered and then slot it back in. That as an unexpected turn of events.

Heading back home tomorrow I hope all goes well from here on.

Easter has come and gone I managed to get some fitting of strip planking done.

Last weekend I went to Sydney to celebrate my daughter, Emily, completing her Masters Degree at Sydney Unversity. She has done extremely well to get to where she has when all the powers at her school said she didn't have the ENTER score to get into Physiotherapy. She back doored it and I am rather proud of her for doing it that way.

This week and over the last couple of days I have been able to fit in place and glue down almost all the strips for the aft deck. This area has been a lot easier to do than the foredeck. I have been able to glue in place 4 planks each side of the boat at the same time whils doing th aftere deck.
Doing the foredeck means really only doing 2 planks each side at a time.

This week I will concentrate on the foredeck and get it to the same stage as the aft deck, before I have to concentrate on the long lengths of decking outside the line of the cockpits.
For the long lengths of Mahogany outside the edges of the cockpits I am using some Fijian Mahogany. Same species as the Honduras except it is plantation grown. It tends to be a bit lighter in colour and weight/density.

I have taken some photos of the progress which will be uploaded in due course.

Cheers
Peter

A week has gone by and some things have changed.
The work on the foredeck that I ahd planned to do just didn't eventuate. I did manage to get a couple of aft deck strips gloed in place and some planning.
I now have all the Mahogany and Huon Pine machined ready for the fitting to the foredeck and also for the long lengths out side the line of the cockpit edges.
This afternoon I did all that machining and did some fitting of the strips for the foredeck.

I will fit the strips between the cockpits and the engine compartment first and then do thge long lengths.
I have to say that it is looking impressive.
Tomorrow I will try and fit some of the dividing strips before going to the footy.
All straight forward from here!!!!!!!

The dividing strips are all glued in place and I'm starting on the foredeck again before the rain that we are bound to get soon sets in.

Today I cut up some plywood for the floor in the front cockpit. I have also made the seat framework out of the same 3/4 marine ply as the floors.

I'm not sure how high the seats should be above floor level. Before I put any padded seating in I have these frames at 100mm above the floor level. At present they are only screwed together so can be changed easily.

How thick is the seat padding normally? If its say 50 mm I may have to lower the framework to get knee room under the steering wheel.

Tomorrow I will glue some more of the foredeck strips in place and maybe a couple of the strips either side of the engine bay. I may need some more clamps to move things along a bit quicker.

A couple more strips glued in place this morning.

Yesterday I changed the height of the front seat base but I fear that I may have now made it a bit too low. I will leave it as it stands at the moment and wait till I have to make the final decision a bit later.

Still it makes the whole thing look as though it has taken a huge leap ahead. The main area that I have to concentrate on for the next period is the Foredeck. I can't do anymore deck strips aft of the front cockpit or outboard of the engine bay until I have the foredeck either port or starboard done to the outboard line of the front cockpit.

So the progress continues.
Soon it will be onto the mechanical stuff!

Short lengths of the foredeck finished this afternoon. Just as I started to apply the glue it started to rain. I rather quickly put the tarp up over the bow and continued.

The whole boat to the outboard line of the cockpit is now complete. There are about 4 long strips to fit and glue in place on both sides of the boat.

Now that the planking has been laid over a fairly large area I can stand back and have a good look. I'm sort of glad that the decision on the deck layout took as long as it did.

There are some joints that could have been done better than what they are but I'm probably being a bit super critical. The project as a whole is starting to really take shape and I'm more than happy with my efforts

Before I can lay any of the long of decking I have to do the machining on the Huon Pine and will do the Silver Ash for the coaming at the same time.
Cheers
Peter

Another update

The foredeck clamps were taken off today and the whole deck area cleaned up. Looks good.

After work today I cut and machined up the coaming material, I also ran the long lengths of the Huon Pine through the thicknesser.

The Makita table saw only just coped with 50mm thick Silver Ash. It did trip the overload a couple of times but eventually sliced it up. I suppose that it was at its limit in cutting the 4.8 mtr length up of 50mm relatively hard timber
So all is set for doing the remainder of the deck strips. I'm hoping to get some done on Saturday.
I'm going to try and get the two long lengths of Huon on each side of the cockpit glued in place on the deck area over the weekend.

Late this afternoon I screwed the Ash coaming in place. It still has to come back off to take off the sharp edges and to counterbore the screw holes but it was good to get it in place. It looks a great contrast against the Mahogany and the red stained finish of the hull.

I don't think that I will get much if anything done tomorrow. Medical appointments in morning and work in the arvo.
