It depends on the varnish.
The Norglass poly that I used has a specific thinners for spraying and a different thinners for brushing.
If its a spar varnish mineral turps is fine.

Im not trying to be be smart but have a look at the material data sheet for the varnish or read the side of the can.

We have decided on the pattern for the deck. Exact layout will remain a secret till the unveiling of the project. What I will reveal is that it is a combination of Huon Pine and Honduras Mahogany laid as strips over 6mm marine plywood.

It will be glued down to the plywood. The ply deck will get a coat of Everdure or equivelent first.
Not sure if it will be bedded in epoxy or one of the other bedding adhesives. That is at least a fortnight away so I can do some investigation on what is the best way to go.

Peter I have sprayed it with the enamel thiners today, and it dries faster, the can did say turps but when I was it the furniture manufacture we used thiners but that was wattal estapol but that can says turps too.
The last time I painted the deck with a brush , in some small sections I got very small bubbles on the surface, thay did pop when touched , my be ony 1mm round. it may have been to hot, dont know or recoated to soon.

It too hot and we've had enuf of it.

By lunch time today I had had enough of it and came home from work. After a plunge in the pool to cool off and calm down I started doing some small things on the boat.
I have applied 2 coats of the Norglass epoxy timber sealer to the full deck areas.
Whist this was drying, which didn't take very long in this heat, I gathered all the bits and pieces for the steering. I had to change the radius of the knees in the fwd end of the front cockpit to give clearance for the steering wheel. I may still have to make a spacer between steering wheel and the steering hub.

I have the cable for the steering and it's reay to install. Just have to find some pulleys for the brackets before its installed permanently. Once the steering hub is installed I will think about nailing down the foredeck.

I salvaged the old flooring from the scrap pile and found that it fitted the new engine bearers and the bow section of the boat. Great template but that's all it's good for. At least I now have a reference point for where the front seats start. Just have to work out replacement of the rear flooring to get the start point for the rear seating

Dinner is nearly ready add more later

So steering hub installed and also the cable. Also a couple of the deck plywood panels have been glued and nailed in place.

I have found the sheaves that I need for the steering. 60mm nylon suitable for the 4mm SS cable for the steering. $2.40 each plus postage. They are from a SS rigging supplier in Qld. I will put the suppliers name in the relevant area later.
Once they arrive I will install them and then glue and nail the foredeck plywood down. Then move along the boat and by the end of the weekend I should have the whole deck glued and nailed down.

I may leave a couple of small panels off the aft deck so that I can play around with the fitting of the fuel tank installation a bit easier.

I'm over this hot weather it's a pain. Roll on a proper Melbourne autumn. At least then I could get a decent nights sleep.
Cheers
Peter

Absoloutly with you obout being over the heat, I cant bring myself to do anything in the shed until it cools down a bit.... I was talked out of insulation in favour of whirly things in the roof.. big mistake.

The Kingplank was installed today. I will give the adhesive a good day and a half to dry before I remove the clamping system.
Tomorrow I will probably do some machining of the mahogany depending on what the weather is like.

The Huon pine is all machined ready to be installed. The Mahogany for the infill and the Silver Ash for the coaming and the cockpit trim still has to be machined. Also need to cut out and make the transom style pece.

The Amoora transom with Silver Ash for the transom style piece should look really spiffy.

So nearly a week since last update and a bit has happened.

Some of the Mahogany and Silver Ash deck edge strips have been glued in place. The deck panels for the aft deck still have to be glued in place but they can't be finished off until I fit the last steering pulleys and brackets inside the transom. I seem to have put one where I can't find it. I won't say that I've lost it yet but I think I might have.

This afternoon after work I fitted the cavitation plate and steering. This is a bit early in the whole scheme of things but I did it as the steering has a tiller arm that goes through the transom. The steering cables and pulleys are all internal so I thought it best to do this before the aft deck is fitted.
I have trial fitted the deck edge strips but will need to machine up more strips before I go too much further.
I've also trial fitted a couple of the Huon strips on the foredeck and they will work out really well. The Huon in contrast to the Mahogany even without being varnished has a great look.

I just hope that I have enough of both timbers to finish the job.

The lastest update is that I have started totrial fit the foredeck Huon pine strip. I have fitted 4 planks so far but they are still to be glued in place.
I have also glued a couple more strips on the thin strips along the deck edge also the first across the transom edge.
after work tomorrow I will clean up the glue remnants and think about trial fitting a couple more of the strips.

mahogany deck planks all machined up. the grain that was hidden by the dirty outside of the timber is amazing.
Ive decided to plank the deck with 50 mm wide strips of the mahogany and will get some more to do the whole engine cover with the mahogany.
So by the end of easter I should have about 30% of the deck planked if I am allowed to go and play in the shed as opposed having to do other things

wish me luck

Have a happy Easter guys and gals
