Re: our project
Hi Guys and fellow enthusiasts:
I have been very slack and havent been doing much.
I was endeavoring to get to Nerandera for a Gecko at the goings on but things just got in the way.
I am well and apart from having done the right thing and rolled the boat over to complete the roving I have done nothing at all.
I had a mate, Reg Coldwell, that I have known since early in my Navy days lined up to help me and then the "prick" did the dirty on me and promptly had a heart attack and died. I spoke to him the night before to talk about where I was at with my leukemia which is in a good place. It's in the CML version of remission so I am more than thrilled but the circumstances of the way that Reg died has hit me quite hard. I have known him for nearly 40 years and then suddenly he's not there any more!
But thanks for the phone call from Nick and the enquiries about my well being. Have to wait till daughter comes from Sydney to sit on the end of the dolly. She owes me big time!
cheers and I will be around more frequently

Man too bad about your mate. The older i get he more i think about my mortality. I try and bleed every ounce out of my day. It might shortn my life but boy its better than wishing you had done something and cant.
Good luck with your health. Now get out into that shed.

Re: our project
Peter, I would be more than happy to come over and help with the roving. I have some to do myself and would love to see the process before doing it. Next couple of weekends are good if you want.

Good to hear from you Peter, I was a bit worried that we had not heard from you for some time so I thought I might ask the question of how are you as you were often posting some thing and then nothing for ages.
Loosing a good mate is some thing that keeps reminding you when you do things that you would have done together .

Re: our project
So Christmas has come and gone. Hope we all recieved the presents that we deserved!!!!!!!!!!!
2013 is now here and I have been outside with daughter in tow and been doing some nailing and roving. Me inside the upturned boat and her on the dolly on the outside
Only a couple of instances of miscommunication so a good day was had
Today between the essential dips in the pool to cool off, we managed to do the whiole of the length of each side of the keel about 50 nails
and the replacement ribs on two planks on the Stbd side so probably another 20 nails
I have just counted how many are left to do and there are around about 80 something still to be done. Am running out of roves so may have to get some more just in case.
Some need packers under a couple of the ribs to the planks as the ribs are not sitting down quite tight on the planks and some other nail holes will need to have some epoxy squirted into the hole, as the nail hole is bigger than the shank size of the nail. This should seal the hole up nicely.
It's supposed to be 41*C here tomorrow so will get out there early and do some in the morning and then call it quits when the temp gets high.
With a bit of luck the hull will be complete as far as the nailing off is concerned by either Sunday night or Monday night at the latest.
After that will be the recaulking of the garboard plank to the keel.
Trim off the planks at the transom and then start sanding to get a key for the varnish.
I was thinking of stripping back to bare timber but have decided against it. A lot less work in just getting a key onto the old varnish which is still in good condition. Then applying 4 or 5 coats of Spar Varnish and see what it comes up like.
Can't wait to roll it back over then spray the inside of the hull with the Varnish. once the boat is rolled over again tit will seem as though some headway is being made.
cheers

Re: our project
Thanks for the update Pete. Sounds like you are progressing well. It's going to be a rough week in Melbourne with temps around the high 30's low 40's tipped for some days to come, so I think we'll forgive you for taking it a bit easy.

Re: our project
Hi Guys
Well the weather today was more conducive to working on the boat.
So we did probably about 50 - 60 nails and roves.
The surface of the nails is coming up really well.
Daughter, Emily, is doing an amazing job on the dolly and where we have to redrill some (or drill some of the pilot holes her father forgot) she has matched the angles really well.
I'm impressed.
We are at the stage where we have run out of 0.5 inch roves so have to source some more. We actually have 5 left but called it a day.
The last lot we purchased from a supplier in Sorrento were in my opinion just rubbish. They were not 0.5" but 12 mm and were higher than the Otter brand I have been using. This means that the conical shape is at a higher angle and they also had a sharp edge. Just not correct and didn't match what I have already been using.
I have found a place in Brisbane that has Otter roves and have ordered some
I won't say who they are till I recieve them and check it all out.
There is another place in Cheltenham that says they have them in stock will call them tomorrow and see. They seem to have a link with the Sorrento mob which doesn't sound good for the correct items.
So we are having a temporary lay off on the nail and roving till we get some more.
What I will do tomorrow is probably trim off the transom. Although the weather again sounds horrible.
And seeing as how Wednesday is my wifes birthday I had better go and buy her a big Present .
With all these dodgy suppliers of product it almost make one want to think about going into a small business on the side supplying the correct items!!
cheers

Re: our project
so an update on the rove situation
1. There is a place in Melbourne, Marine Sport, that has imported 0.5"/13mm roves quality looks OK. The down side is that they are made of Annealed Copper that has not been polished so the roves are Black.
Ok for a painted interior of a boat but hand polishing 150 or there abouts individual roves doesnt sound like fun.
2. The ones from the Wooden boat shop are in my opinion the wrong shape.
3. Reel Tackle in Brisbane said they had some and their website showed Otter Brand Roves They dont have any and cant get any
4. Tried A place called Sam Allen in Brisbane. Again Website says they have stock but but conversation says cant get them.
5. I have tried a couple of old boat builder down here in Melbourne, Pompeis and they havent got any. Charlie Blunt in williamstown thinks that they may have some will check back tomorrow.
So I guess that I can say that there are none around.
I havent tried West Australia yet nor South Australia. But I give up
The ironic thing is that my father was a sheet metal worker and I can imagine him just setting up a small pnumatic kick press and then starting to make them.
Not hard
Process would be:
Metre long polished copper sheet cut into say 9/16" strips for 1/2' roves, fed through guides into a press that would punch out the disc shape, punch the 7/64 hole in the centre and set the cone shape in one pressing movement.
It cant be hard considering that for our purposes we would need maybe 600-700 for a complete boat.
just frustrating finding the right items that are made locally
I will get off my soap box for now
cheers
