Dodge powered clinker
Re: Dodge powered clinker
No problems Gavin,
thought you must have had a phone in each hand, at least the site had some action, been quiet lately.
Alan.

Re: Dodge powered clinker
Have been looking for a fair while now - I was in the running for this one
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/wooden-ski-b ... 3374b3b249
This boat should look familar to you Ross - given that it is your style boat - a hartley sportwinn with a flat bottom - I purchased the Hartley plans and your stem profile is the give away (the one on ebay is different to plans but yours is exactly the sames as in the hartley plans).
Yes, dollars are up there for freight 2.5 to 3.0k
It does look like a good project - most of work is done - putting deck on / seats / and wire up will not take that long - blokes that own boat seem like top blokes, very obliging.
Cheers Alan - did feel like a bit of a newbie

Re: Dodge powered clinker
Congrats on your new project Gavin.
Do you have any history on the boat? I am trying to confirm whether it is the Bruce Walker runabout called Gedda.

Re: Dodge powered clinker
Hello Greg,
Absolutely no history on boat - have asked the guys that did own it and they have no knowledge of boat history - when I get the boat I was going to search what dodge engine is in it to put a year to engine year of manufacture.
Will ask the guys what boat was called before they did work on hull - what make is it did you think?

Possibly built by Bruce Walker, who was based in Heyfield in Gippsland.

Re: Dodge powered clinker
Congratulations Gavin,
The flathead dodge 6 (Dodge Kew) was a common motor in these old boats, long stroke with high torque output. My father told me there were 2 options when he built his boat and these were the Dodge Kew (around 250 to 265ci) and Ford Flathead 239ci. Have a mate with around 9 of these on his place, he has worked on them and they are good engines.
Again it's great that you now have a boat!

Re: Dodge powered clinker
Cheers James,
Have been looking for a fair while - I have posted some of the previous candidates tonight for anyone looking for a project.
I have 2 x holden 202 marinised engines one is set up for a speed boat and the other is for a ski boat - slowly been aquiring them as all projects seemed minus an engine - the plan was to make one really good one from the two.
I had been thinking to remove the Dodge engine (having not known anything about it) but after searching you tube - really keen to leave in place and see how fast it actually goes. Some links show where they have been sitting for several years and go without any major effort - indestructable.

Re: Dodge powered clinker
Hello Ross,
No, boat has not arrived yet - I have phoned a few times now and it was supposed to be here tomorrow Friday 6th but it is on truck on way and should be here by mid next week. Talk about stretch it out. Apparently the boat got towed behind a ute the first 300k's - funny there was no mention of that in the transport contract - but hey, hopefully it gets here with no damage.
I will take some photos of where we ski - you guys wont beleive it - the lake is next to a mine - most times you can see 300 tonne dump trucks do their routes on the high ground not 500 metres away. You guys have it so easy. An invite to all skilled guys - come west boys - here is where the money is - no beach, no river, just heaps of work & money for your toys.
I am somewhat saddened that the previous / prevous owner has glass sheathed the hull and on a couple of the photos you can see why as there is split planks each side of motor (same plank number each side - probably from the force of the Dodge) on the fasteners - so I have had a big read up of how to remove fibreglass and now have a lot of clinker boat books.
I am a machinist by trade so steam bending wll be whole new thing - making the steam box set up will be the easy part but slowly slowly, I hope to get know how to do it, so dont be suprised if I quiz you guys for help.
The shed is ready too - it is pretty small so I am making a frame for boat to sit on, one that is on rollers so as to move around to keep working space.
When boat arrives I will make ready to go on lake and see if it doesnt leak, fire the dodge up before it undergos a restoration - hope I dont stuff it up, when in doubt read or ask - no egos here.
Still love your boat Ross - the twin cockpit is a fantastic look.
Regards all Gavin
