Not sure if I should start another thread for AJAY or just keep on adding to this one, but I've checked the block and head numbers on the 272 Y block (which is now pulled down for rebuild). The motor is a 1955 272. Standard 272's that year were rated at a mighty 162 hp. This block and heads has a casting i.d. "ECG" which along with the "ECH" blocks were a "special" with higher compression ratio, and were fitted with a 4 barrel carby as standard. They put out a whopping 182 hp! Stay tuned for more info. If anyone gets heart palpitations as a result of this breakthrough in Y block trivia, then by all means pop by and I'll plug you into my ECG

Well, looks like the old 327 in Bullitt was not going to last out the summer before a rebuild after all. As Alan noticed at Narrandera, the motor was blowing a bit out of the rocker breather. When I had the heads off during the winter hibernation I noticed the bores were less than spectacular, with some old pitting evident from water having sat in the bores at some stage in the past. I had checked the compression last year and it wasn't too bad so I thought I'd be right for this summer, then pull it all down again next winter and doe the bottom end etc. BUT, the crankcase pressurisation slowly worsened, to the point that after a good squirt the dipstick was popping up and oil was geysering out of the dipstick hole.

After a short run on sunday morning out on the lake, I returned to the boat to the shed and within 2 hours had the motor out and pulled down to bare block (pistons and crank still in place). Dropped that lot off to North East Head Repairs in Wangaratta first thing monday morning. Just waiting on a quote now.....

The boat will be back in the water mid December :o
