Any one know what sort of tacho works with a magneto and where i might obtain said tacho. It's a 4 cylinder and the hole is about 4". Looking for something old school. Ray

Ray,
Usually on the dist, but could be on the end of the cam drive, just look for a speedo drive like screw attachment.

Ray - I used an Auto Meter brand electronic tacho on Rebound.... I also have a Vertex magneto. The kit included a 0-7000 rpm tacho and a little black box with wires hanging out of it that hooks up to the magneto. I was never sure that the tacho reading was right but after fitting the mechanical tacho I now think the electronic unit was probably okay. If you want to try it out, just let me know.

Hi Dave, my magneto is from a ferguson tractor! Apparently it was THE hotup for Vanguards, but no tacho drive!! Hey Bob i will get back to you on that setup of yours, how big is the tacho? I'm guessing 7,000 rpm is going to be plenty. Will it work on a 4 pot? cheers Ray

My fathers fist boat had a cable drive tacho, but it run of the fanbelt by a small spring loaded pulley running on the back of the belt
It was a Stuart warner from memory .

Hi Ray,
"Firefly" ran a Vandgard motor and tacho drive ran to the nose of crankshaft. Don't forget we going back to the 50's-60's . Being a 4 banger , i would say in the day they used what they could. More likely a Motorbike cable Tacho and fittings. Don't change the time Walk kept it original, that's the WOW factor.
